Prevention and early detection

World Skin Cancer Day

Every June 13th marks World Skin Cancer Day, a date that reminds us of the importance of protecting our skin beyond aesthetics.

While we associate facial care with hydration, spots, or signs of aging, our skin's health should always be the priority. And in this regard, prevention plays a fundamental role.

What is skin cancer?

Skin cancer occurs when skin cells begin to grow abnormally. Although there are different types, the most frequent are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

Some exhibit slow growth and are usually easily detected, while others can be more aggressive and require prompt intervention.

The main types of skin cancer

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma

This is the most common type. It usually appears on sun-exposed areas such as the face, neck, or décolletage. It can manifest as a small shiny lesion, a scab that doesn't heal, or a slightly raised plaque.

  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Also related to accumulated sun exposure. It usually appears as a reddish, rough, or scaly lesion that can grow progressively.

  • Melanoma

This is the most aggressive type and requires earlier detection. It can develop from an existing mole or appear as a new lesion that changes in shape, size, or color.

  • Merkel Cell Carcinoma

It is less common, but more aggressive. It usually presents as a shiny reddish or purplish lump in sun-exposed areas.

How to prevent skin cancer

Prevention begins long before any lesion appears.

Some simple measures can help reduce the risk:

  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen every day to protect your skin from radiation.
  • Reapply sunscreen when necessary.
  • Avoid peak sun radiation hours.
  • Wear hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing.
  • Do not use tanning beds.
  • Have an annual check-up with a dermatologist and at any observed change.

The importance of checking your skin

Knowing your skin is one of the best prevention tools.

Periodically observe your moles and spots. If you detect changes in color, size, shape, or texture, or a lesion appears that does not heal correctly, consult a dermatologist.

Early detection significantly increases the chances of treatment and recovery.

The best care starts with protection

In skincare, we talk a lot about active ingredients, treatments, and routines, but there is one product that should be present every day of the year: sunscreen.

It not only helps prevent premature aging and spots but also constitutes one of the most effective tools for protecting our skin's long-term health.

Caring for your skin is much more than an aesthetic matter. Because when it comes to skin cancer, early detection can save lives.

I'll write to you soon,

Mercè 🖤
