When summer arrives, we usually worry about protecting our skin from the sun, applying sunscreen correctly, and staying hydrated. However, there's one aspect that often goes unnoticed: how we store our cosmetics.
And it's more important than it seems.
It's common to take skincare products to the beach, pool, or when traveling. It's also common to leave them in the car, in a suitcase for hours, in a toiletry bag, or on top of a towel. The problem is that these situations can expose cosmetics to very high temperatures, something they were not designed for.
What happens when a cosmetic is exposed to heat?
Behind every cream, serum, or sunscreen is a carefully developed formula designed to deliver specific results.
Before being released to the market, cosmetics undergo stability tests to ensure they maintain their properties, safety, and efficacy throughout their shelf life. These tests are conducted under specific conditions of temperature, humidity, and storage.
When a product remains exposed to intense heat for hours, the formula can be affected.
Depending on the ingredients it contains, changes in the texture, smell, color, or consistency of the product can occur. In addition, some active ingredients are especially sensitive to high temperatures and can degrade more quickly when stored improperly.
Therefore, even if a cosmetic does not show visible changes, it does not necessarily mean that it is in the same condition as when it was formulated.
The car: one of the worst places to store cosmetics
During the hottest months of the year, the interior of a vehicle parked in the sun can reach extremely high temperatures in a very short time. Just today, when I got into my car, the thermometer read 45ºC.
Many times we leave sunscreen, a lipstick, hand cream, or even our entire toiletry bag in the car without thinking too much about it. However, these conditions affect the stability of the products, especially if they remain there for several hours or repeatedly.
Beach and pool: another very common mistake
The beach and pool also present situations that are not ideal for storing cosmetics.
It's common to leave sunscreen or your toiletry bag on top of your towel, exposed to direct sun all morning or afternoon. While it's convenient to have them on hand for reapplication, this continuous exposure to heat is not the best option.
Whenever possible, it's preferable to store products in a place protected from the sun, inside a bag or toiletry case, and even better, in the shade or inside a cooler if you bring one.
Which products are most affected?
Although any cosmetic can suffer if exposed to extreme temperatures, some are especially sensitive:
- Sunscreen.
- Serums with antioxidant active ingredients.
- Products with vitamin C.
- Facial creams and emulsions.
- Eye contour creams.
- Makeup.
- Lipsticks.
How to better store your cosmetics in summer
The good news is that protecting your products during the hotter months is very simple. Some practical recommendations are:
- Avoid leaving them inside the car.
- Do not leave them exposed to the sun on your towel.
- Store them in a toiletry bag when you are away from home.
- Whenever possible, keep them in cool, dry places.
- Close containers tightly after use.
These are small actions that can help you better preserve your products and maintain their properties for longer.

When we invest in a good product, we usually pay attention to the ingredients, the formulation, or whether it is suitable for our skin. But just as important as choosing a cosmetic well is storing it correctly.
Because skincare is not just about using good products. It's also about ensuring they maintain the quality, stability, and effectiveness for which they were formulated.
